Why We Don't Approve a Sample Just Because It Looks Good on the Table

A garment can look perfect on a table.

That doesn't mean much.

We still put samples on the table, of course.

It's where most measurements are taken. It's where we check symmetry, stitching, construction and details that are difficult to inspect while somebody is wearing the garment.

But a table has one major disadvantage.

It doesn't move.

It doesn't have shoulders.

It doesn't walk.

It doesn't sit down.

And it definitely doesn't put its hands into the pockets.

I remember a T-shirt that looked unusually good when it first came back from sampling.

The body was clean.

The shoulders were even.

The sleeves had the right shape.

The neckline looked exactly as expected.

It was the kind of sample that makes you think the fitting session will be quick.

We measured it.

Everything was within the expected range.

Then somebody put it on.

The first reaction wasn't dramatic.

Nobody said, "This is wrong."

The person wearing it just stood there for a few seconds.

Then he moved his shoulders.

That's when we saw it.

The shirt looked fine when standing still.

The moment the arms moved forward, the front body pulled slightly upward.

Not much.

Maybe enough for most people not to notice in a photograph.

But enough to change how the shirt felt.

This is one of the reasons we don't like making decisions from a flat garment alone.

A flat garment is only one moment.

Clothing is worn through hundreds of moments.

Standing.

Walking.

Reaching.

Sitting.

Driving.

Putting something into a pocket.

The body keeps changing position.

The garment has to respond.

Some fit problems are almost impossible to see when a sample is laid flat.

A sleeve may measure perfectly but rotate slightly when the arm hangs naturally.

A shoulder may look symmetrical but pull when the wearer reaches forward.

A pocket may be placed correctly on the pattern but feel too high when someone actually uses it.

The measurements can all be right.

The garment can still feel wrong.

We usually start a fitting session without a measuring tape.

That surprises some people.

The tape comes later.

First, we look at the garment on the body.

Not just from the front.

Side view.

Back view.

Arms relaxed.

Arms raised.

Arms forward.

Sometimes the person walks across the room.

It sounds very ordinary.

That's the point.

We want to see the garment doing the things a garment normally has to do.

One hoodie taught us this particularly well.

The sample looked balanced when standing still.

The body width was generous.

The sleeves were relaxed.

The hood had the right volume.

Everything suggested an oversized fit.

Then the model sat down.

The front hem lifted more than expected.

It wasn't a problem with the body length alone.

The fabric had nowhere to go once the body bent.

The result was a hoodie that looked oversized while standing but felt surprisingly short while sitting.

If we had approved it based only on the standing fit, we would've missed the problem.

The solution wasn't simply adding more length.

That would've created another problem.

The garment was already close to the desired length while standing.

Adding several centimetres would have made the front look too long.

We adjusted the relationship between the body shape and the hem instead.

A small change.

Not dramatic.

But enough to give the fabric somewhere to move when the body changed position.

That's the sort of adjustment that doesn't show up clearly on a specification sheet.

A similar thing happens with sleeves.

People often focus on sleeve length.

It makes sense.

It's easy to measure.

But sleeve length isn't always the reason a sleeve feels short.

The armhole position, shoulder angle and sleeve shape all affect how much freedom the arm has.

A sleeve can be long enough on paper and still pull when the wearer reaches forward.

Add more length and sometimes the problem gets worse.

The sleeve becomes longer.

The movement doesn't improve.

That's when a fitting session becomes more useful than another round of measurements.

The person wearing the sample can usually tell us something the pattern cannot.

"Pulls here."

"Feels tight when I reach forward."

"Fine standing, but strange when I sit."

Those comments aren't technical.

They don't need to be.

Our job is to translate them into technical changes.

We once had a jacket where the customer kept saying the back felt tight.

The back measurement was generous.

There was enough width.

Nothing looked obviously wrong.

At first, it was tempting to add more room.

But when the wearer reached forward, the real issue became obvious.

The sleeve and back were working against each other.

Adding width to the back would've made the jacket look too loose without solving the movement problem.

The pattern needed a different adjustment.

The problem was not simply "not enough fabric."

It was where the fabric was being used.

This is something people sometimes misunderstand about fit.

More room does not always mean more comfort.

A garment can be made wider and still restrict movement.

A sleeve can be made longer and still feel short.

A hoodie can be made bigger and still look too tight in the wrong place.

The body doesn't experience measurements individually.

It experiences the garment as a whole.

We still check every measurement.

Of course.

A sample that fits well but is outside the agreed measurements isn't automatically acceptable.

Measurements give us control.

Fitting gives us context.

You need both.

One tells you what the garment is.

The other tells you what the garment does.

There's also a practical reason we prefer to see samples worn before approval.

People often react differently when they see a garment on a table.

They inspect it like a product.

When they put it on, they react like a customer.

The questions change.

"Does the shoulder look right?" becomes:

"Would I actually wear this?"

"Is the sleeve 64 centimetres?" becomes:

"Can I move comfortably?"

Those are different conversations.

Both matter.

Sometimes the sample on the table really is perfect.

Then somebody wears it and confirms exactly that.

Those are the easy ones.

But the samples that look good and feel wrong are more interesting.

They force us to look beyond the obvious.

A garment is not a collection of measurements hanging in the air.

It is a three-dimensional object moving around a three-dimensional body.

That sounds obvious.

It is also easy to forget when everyone is sitting around a table with a measuring tape.

So we still use the table.

We just don't let it make the final decision.
